Home School Psychology – Calming Down #togetherathome

In this video, Mr. Parker explains how it’s really a great idea to use techniques like calming down when you are in a stressful situation. Sometimes kids can push each other or say mean things, even though our first instinct might be to become angry or lose our temper. That’s understandable when someone is mean to you. But Mr. Parker explains why this isn’t the best way to solve this situation. Staying calm is hard but it can really improve your life when you’re faced with a challenging situation. Mr. Parker gives 4 steps that we can use to stay calm.

1: Think
2: Count
3: Ask
4: Walk Away

I’m going to calm down today yeah yeah
gonna keep bad thoughts away yeah yeah
First I’m going to think about what it is you did
Then I’m gonna count to calm down for a minute
I’m gonna use my words to ask if it was an accident
At least I’ll find out why it’s happening
If we can’t figure it out I think it’s time to move away
But at least I know I managed my emotions OK
I’m gonna stay calm today yeah yeah
I’m gonna keep bad thoughts away yeah yeah

Mr. Parker has a wide range of experience including teaching at the university level, working in elementary, middle, and high schools and using music to make social-emotional skills relatable. He’s been playing the guitar and drums for over 15 years and loves making music. He believes music allows us to relax, have fun, and better remember things we are learning. He’s found that just listening to music can calm our nerves, help us smile more and better understand our feelings. With over 8 years of experience in schools, universities and private practice, he hopes you’ll enjoy these lessons and looks forward to singing with you!

Hey Adam, I love your positivity amongst these times of uncertainty. My question is more of a professional one. This upcoming August, I start my MA/CAGS program in school psychology. Do you have any tips for new graduate students in this field?

Thank You Adam Parker. This was super helpful right NOW as a situation arose with my 8 year old son whose name is also Adam. I got him to listen to this and I can see how it will be helpful in the future. ♡
