Joscha: Computational Meta-Psychology

Computational theories of the mind seem to be ideally suited to explain rationality. But how can computations be subverted by meaning, emotion and love?

Fantastic description of a function of money. Captures the pathology of our collective (anti) intelligence in a structurally relevant way I think.

Thus guy is gonna have the most quotable statements ever under his wiki. I mean : "Understanding neuroscience by focusing on the neurons is like understanding flight by looking at birds through a microscope"…that's next-level analogy right there!

The central mistake he makes is that the fact that you can conceptualize the brain as a computer does not mean it is a computer. This is ‘confusing the map with the territory’.

Excellent talk. So impressed with how Joscha Back is able to grasp such principles and ideas and then articulate them so fluidly.

This computational view of the human mind and the universe is a mistake, it goes opposite universality. No wonder induction, bayesian reasoning and a wrong idea of occams razor are all over this. Complete misunderstanding of universality

Glad Joshua is not one of those speakers who, when drinking from a plastic bottle of water, insists on un-screwing and re-screwing the cap after each and every sip, crunching-and-crinkling the bottle all the while… Eliezar Yudkowsky – I'm looking at you, sir.

49:32 Rationalism/Enlightenment isn't a way out of this dynamic; it's just another mind virus / belief attractor. Admittedly, one with a much more navigable gradient than most.

    9:46 computation vs mathematics
23:07 cortical columns, Solomonoff induction, prior probability, a hyper-parameter, psychotic states and dreams
28:41 motivational system: (expected) rewards are announced via Dopamine, success is announced / (received) rewards are consumed via Serotonin
30:37 goals are learned, needs are not; Learning vs Doing
31:26 money compared to dopamine: money is broken, because you can hoard it
34:50 opinions signal group loyalty, optimizing for normatively “right” instead of “true”; nerds don’t easily get this
49:56 The self is the mechanism that discovers who you are; the identification changes during development of the self; relativity of values – “if you get there, this is really good”
51:37 It doesn’t stop there – you are not your brain, you are a story that your brain tells itself

This is still the most propable world-model i´ve ever heared.
When i heared the talk in the first place(live at the ccc), i was too young to understand most of it, but my gradient went on a journey.
And now in math-informatics-physiks-bachelor i really enjoy watching it over and over.
Whenever i have an discussion about something psychological or A.I. I recomment this Talk,
to update the worldmodell of my opposite to have an even deeper talk next time 😀
Since the world-model of the talk encurages you to update your world-model, it is no mindvirus itself, so it is consistent and you can always search for
an better explanational model of who/what we are.
"We are not our brains, we are a story that our brain tells itself"
And my current belive is that Joscha´s World-Model is the one with the most navigable gradient, wich even allows you to navigate Through all Mind-Viruses, like the "pro Trump" people or "pro Level 4 God"" are cought in, without adapting to them.
Its like an approximative-minimalisation-Function itself right through all those possible states of Mind.
approximative, since you can never reach the minimum.
To me, at the moment, the global minimum of the consciousness-Function(wich means total pediction of the next moment in the universe) is to be questioned.
    I mean, does it exist?
And if it exists it must be reached by the universe itself(because only the universe itself has all the Data of the Universe)
So maby we can project the Universe as some kind of consciousness.
But although we are Data that started to understand itself and part of the Universe, most of the universe is Data that dosent understand itself(you are free to tell me im wrong at this point ;)).
So if we project the Universe as a consciouseness into the consciouseness-Function it most propable has the consciouseness of a Stone with some bacteria sticking on it.
least propable the universe understands itself, without us noticing(but it would be funny if we would)

    Anyways,
Thanks for this great Talk, it is inspiring and mostly the start of some very good discussions, whith whom ever i show it.

Whenever I hear Joscha's Bach conferences I adapt what he's saying with Deleuze and Guattari's work. I still got much to learn about them all and I need to read Joscha's bach's books. But I'm thinking they adapt very well without the need of matching specific concepts. What do you all think? Any recomendations?
