Role of Nutrition in Mental Health – The Center for Nutritional Psychology
We all know that if we don’t eat well we don’t feel well, but have you ever wondered why this is so? Is there a connection between nutrition and mental health? Yes, In fact, there is! Studies are showing that eating healthy high nutrient foods can make us feel better. They’re also showing that eating processed sugary low nutrient foods can make us feel worse. This connection between nutrition and mental health defines the field of Nutritional Psychology. Nutritional Psychology focuses on how our daily dietary intake patterns — the types of food we eat — affect our mood, behavior, and mental health. Nutritional Psychology addresses the psychological, behavioral, cognitive, perceptual, interoceptive, and psychosocial changes that it occur in relationship with what we eat.
Research is demonstrating that diet is playing an increasingly important role in the mental health of individuals and societies around the globe.
The Center for Nutritional Psychology (CNP) has been developing the field of Nutritional Psychology since 2008 and serves as a growing online resource for those seeking to understand the role that diet plays in mood, behavior, and mental health.
CNP’s mission is to provide access to research, information, and formalized training in the field of NP, and to positively impact the mental health and well-being of individuals around the world. To find out more, visit The Center for Nutritional Psychology (
